We ARE the change!!!
The Ventura County Chapter of CYC was reinstated in December of 2007. Since then, we have accomplished quite a few things, such as:
* A Speak Out in 2008: Where we brought foster youth from throughout the County to talk about issues and concerns they have had regarding group home issues, permanency and emancipation.
* A Community Dinner 2009: Where over 100 community members came together to hear about the findings from the 2008 Speak Out. Over $4000 was raised at the dinner to support the local chapter.
* Created a Training Video: In 2010, the chapter created a video for group homes to use for training purposes. The video gave group home staff a youth prospective on their experiences when living in a group home setting.
* Connecting with Compassion Conference: In 2011, Supervisor Steve Bennett brought together various community organizations from all over Ventura County. The goal of the conference was to build stronger relationships in Ventura County with youth and adults, and exchanged best practices regarding communication, trust and shared decision making. From the conference, the Ventura County Guiding Practices were created.
* Publication of CYC members' book "Through My Eyes: Stories of agony, courage and hope from teh lives of youth in foster care": Over 300 books have been sold.
Big things are happening in 2012! The Ventura CYC Chapter will be hosting CYC's 2012 Annual Summer Leadership and Policy Conference. Stay tuned for more updates to come!
